Matteo Gabbia scored a dramatic late winner, securing AC Milan's victory over fierce rivals Inter in a thrilling Milan derby, relieving pressure on manager Paulo Fonseca.

A victory over Venezia the previous weekend had given Paulo Fonseca some breathing room, but a heavy defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League quickly ramped up the pressure ahead of the Milan derby.

Fonseca's team, however, responded brilliantly, bursting with energy and controlling the early stages. Christian Pulisic seized on a bouncing ball from Henrikh Mkhitaryan, driving through Inter's defense and slotting past Yann Sommer to give Milan a well-deserved lead.

Inter soon struck back, with a slick combination between Lautaro Martinez and Federico Dimarco ending in a crisp low shot from Dimarco into the bottom corner.

Milan reacted strongly again, starting the second half brightly as Rafael Leao's header was well saved. Inter continued to threaten, with Martinez testing Mike Maignan with a sharp volley, but Milan seemed the more dangerous as the match progressed.

Leao was once again denied by Sommer after a quick counter-attack, with Tammy Abraham later firing wide in what appeared to be the final big chance.

But Matteo Gabbia had other plans. His late winner lifted Milan to seventh place, level on points with Inter, who remain ahead only on goal difference.
